This project focuses on prevention of new HIV infections among the youth in the urban informal settlements and rural areas and influencing positive behavior change. This is accomplished through four main activities namely Community Outreach Events (COE), Peer Education Training (PET), Sporting Activities and Most at Risk Population (MARPS). Under the Community Outreach Events, YIKE works with community based organizations and Youth Groups that are involved in the arts. This includes theater, traditional dances and acrobats. these are used as a tool to communicate the different issues on HIV/AIDS.

The Peer Education Training also uses the organized groups in the community to mobilize community members between the ages of 15-35 for sensitization on issues about HIV/AIDS. A total of 25 youth are trained for 5 days in reproductive health issues.

Under the sporting activities, most of the youth in the informal settlements are associated with football games. This therefore is the most used game for this purpose. It offers edutainment for the for the youth participating in the activities. At the site there are usually free V.C.T services, S.T.I and cancer screening.

The MARPS project targets that that are most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS infection. they are the bar maids and bar tenders, long distance truck drivers and the sex workers. Training and Research

Congratulations to the Nairobits/YIKE course one intake two on their graduation to be held on 17th June 2011.

Capacity Building: YIKE through its training seeks to build livelihood skills targeting the IGA (Income Generating
Activities)/small businesses which these groups have. The training also focuses on developing leadership as well
building team cohesion which is necessary for the youth group survival. There are also small grants which YIKE
has been offering towards sustaining and supporting the expansion of the groups’ IGA’s. This is usually given in
form of equipments or materials.

Lobbying and Advocacy: Since YIKE operates as an umbrella body of youth groups, from time to time YIKE has
taken up and lobbied for the adoption of youth friendly policies to be adopted by both the Local and Central
Governments.

The Youth Information Center

The youth information center was established out of the need from the youth to have a place where they can get information. The center gives all youth under YIKE and the community access to internet and other computer services. The youth are also offered basic ICT training, library services and recreational activities like board games and edutainment facilities. In addition, youth under YIKE are allowed twenty minutes free daily to surf the internet and do their mails.

Business Challenge Project

The Business Challenge Project is a competition. YIKE youth groups shall compete for a business grant and one year mentorship relationship with a Dutch financial company.
Participants shall submit their rough business idea. They shall then be thoroughly trained in three stages on business plan writing
This shall culminate in a grand business presentation day where candidates shall present and defend their plans before a jury/panel of experienced business people.
The three top plans shall win a grant and mentorship relationship.
All other candidates will come out of the process with a well-defined business plan – which will increase their chances for sponsorship.

Gender and governance programme.

With our partner UN Women, YIKE seeks to increase the number of youth entering and completing secondary schools. We seek to achieve this by making available information on existing opportunities so that the youths can choose who to approach in case they need fees. Government supported Secondary Education Bursary Fund (SEBF) is such an important opportunity for girls and boys in schools. The study therefore seeks to understand the degree in which gender responsive approaches have been used in the disbursement of funds in Embakasi, Kasarani and Starehe constituencies in Nairobi and to develop mechanisms and tools that would strengthen the application of gender responsive approach in all constituencies in Kenya. The project will involve a tracer study of those who have applied for bursary funds over the past 5 years and will involve participatory analyses with various stakeholders.

Finance and Administration Department

The objective of Finance & Administration Department is to assist  YIKE in achieving specific objectives by establishing and maintaining an efficient financial management and administration system.
